A Runway alternative with no subscription

Runway is a broad AI creative suite with its own video models, sold as monthly credit plans. VidGen does one job: you storyboard your story as real 3D scenes for free, fix them in plain words, and pay only for the shots you film.

Where Runway is stronger

Runway is a full creative suite, and it does a lot that VidGen does not.

Who should pick which

How it works

  1. Describe the story in a sentence or paste a full treatment. Pick a format (wide 16:9, vertical 9:16 or square) and a look.
  2. The planner writes the story and blocks out every page as a real 3D scene: the cast, the set, the light, the weather and a camera move.
  3. Select the scenes that are not right and say what to change in plain words. Only those scenes are redrawn, and every edit can be undone. All of this is free.
  4. Approve and film: an image model paints each 3D frame in your style, a video model (such as Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 or Seedance 2.0) animates it, and narration, captions and music are added in one pass.

What it costs

Writing, blocking and editing the 3D storyboard is free, and so is a 3D animatic film of it. You pay only for the AI work you approve: the provider's list price plus 20%, shown before every render. There is no subscription and no account, credit never expires, shots that fail are not charged, and when you change one scene later only that shot is filmed again.

New visitors get $0.85 of free AI credit, enough to film one short scene; a limited number are given each day.

Questions

Is VidGen a full replacement for Runway?

No. VidGen focuses on one path: a story, a 3D storyboard you direct, and a narrated AI film. It cannot edit footage you upload, and it has no team features or video model of its own.

Do I need a subscription?

No. You add prepaid credit when you want to film. Packs start at $10 and never expire, and planning in 3D costs nothing.

Can I use the films commercially?

Yes. You own the film and can use it commercially, for example on a monetized YouTube channel.

Your next film starts with one sentence.

Building and editing the 3D storyboard is free. Pay only for the AI shots you approve.
